The Little Known Benefits Of Working For The Government -
The Little Known Benefits Of Working For The Government - Governments are some of the worldâs biggest employers. These organisations take on huge amounts of people in all sorts of fields, ranging from politics right the way through to construction and buildings, and this makes them a great place for anyone looking for a job to start their hunt. Of course, though, what exactly are the benefits of working for a group like this instead of getting a normal job? To help you out, this post will be exploring this area, giving you an idea of what you stand to gain from a role in this field. Financial Future Along with offering good salaries while youâre doing the job, working for your local government can provide for your finances long after youâve left. These roles are often some of the most generous when it comes to areas like pensions, health care, and insurance, making them great for anyone who doesnât want to have to worry about these areas as they go into the future. Of course, this is all work which you should be thinking about, and having it handled by your boss will only make it easier. Professional Future There are a lot of jobs out there which require qualifications when you first get started out. Once youâre into them, though, it can take a very long time for them to get anywhere, with the work youâre doing only good for the time you spend in the same role. With a government position, though, you could start on the road with an online civil engineering masters degree, only to find yourself with something much greater after a few years go by. Itâs rare that you will find employers willing to do this, nowadays. Public Holidays It can be easy to let public holidays slip by when youâre in a lot of normal jobs, with the work only stopping for the most important events. Governments donât work on any of these days, though, and this means that you will be getting a lot more time off throughout the year than youâre used to. Of course, this comes with a negative side, as you wonât get paid quite as much, but this will be worth it if you have a family. For The Resume Most people donât stay in the same role forever, and will want to look for something new after a few years have gone by. Your resume plays a very large part in your success during a process like this. There are few better ways to improve this sort of document than working for a government, with people finding it easier to trust those who have go this experience, while also providing you with a reference with everyone will recognise. There are loads of reasons to go for a job with the people running your local area. A lot of people ignore these benefits, though, choosing to spend their life working for normal companies. When you have the chance to do something better, it will always be worth taking it, even if you have to do more work along the way.

The Importance of Focusing While in Transition - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
The Importance of Focusing While in Transition - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career I for one fully understand those in transition. Iâve been there at times myselfand for way too long. Life for the unemployed is hugely confusing. The quasi life equilibrium that used to exist before the transition period has been lost. And everybody you know seems to want to be helpful by giving you (nonprofessional) advice, which can add another layer of confusion to your bewilderment, thereby causing further disorientation. So, whatâs the best thing to do to get back on track, get a job, and reach a life balance again? The answer may seem too simplistic: FOCUS. Youâve probably heard the cliché âIf you donât know where youâre going, youâre going nowhere.â How true, so therefore you need a path, a direction, and a huge amount of mental energy to stay focused on the right things. The following (professional!) advice is paraphrased from a recent networking presentation given by my friend Abby Kohut (http://absolutelyabby.com/), whoâs one of the smartest people I know in this business. Thirty percent of your time should be spent in live networking. Sixty to 80 percent of people get their jobs via networking. Think about how you got your last job: probably by talking to someone who put you in touch with others, and the next thing was an interview. Another 30 percent of your time should be spent on applying for jobs online, generating leads, and communicating via e-mail. Twenty percent of your time should be spent on volunteering. It is critical for your mental health simply to be with people, to get involved, and to get exposure. The last 20 percent of your time should be spent doing things for yourself. People are like batteries: periodically, they need to be recharged. In order to project to the hiring manager via the interview that you are the ideal candidate, you have to feel good about yourself. So, whatever makes you feel that way, do it! By following these guidelines, staying focused, and cultivating perseverance, youâll be handsomely rewarded with a job you deserve.

What to Know About Your Resume
What to Know About Your ResumeThere are many elements that make up a perfect resume. However, the first thing you need to do is to make sure that you have a good resume description. Before you can get started on a resume, you need to have a strong and creative description. It doesn't matter if you can't write your own or if you are not a writer, you will still need to create one of these descriptions in order to ensure that you get it right. When you are creating a resume, the main thing you need to remember is that you have to be professional. This means that you don't want to come across as a flamboyant resume writer. You are going to have to come across as professional and laid back, and it is this professional attitude that will get you across when you are writing your description. You want to try and keep your description as brief as possible. The more detailed you are, the more of an impression you are going to make on the company that is reviewing your resume. You also don't wan t to go overboard either, so keep it simple and don't try and be too fancy. At the same time, remember that your resume is a reflection of who you are, so you can't go too over the top. If you overdo it, you might end up looking unprofessional.Another good thing to remember is that there is a specific job that you need to focus on when creating your resume. Remember that the company has many different things to think about before making a decision, so it is very important that you focus on the specific job you are applying for. By focusing on one particular career, you will be able to make your resume stand out from the rest.Once you know what job you are aiming for, you will need to take a look at the company's job positions that are available. The information you find out about the company and what positions they have open will help you come up with an interesting description. What you want to do is to focus on what you can do for the company as well as the position that you are a pplying for.Don't forget to include yourself when you are listing your accomplishments, because you want to make sure that you leave some room for yourself to be included in your description. Do remember that people remember what they don't see. They will always remember the part that is not visible, so try to use that as much as possible. People are visual, so they are more likely to remember a statement that they saw on your resume rather than one that was written.Try to list all of your accomplishments at least once, but it may be a good idea to use a review site to help you. You can also go back and review your resume with a professional to make sure that it is well-written and needs no changes. A professional can also help you create a great resume description. Don't just settle for what is available; make sure that you have a job description that includes the skills you have for the job.Make sure that you know what you want to say about yourself and make sure that you include everything that you want to say. Take some time to make sure that the description you choose is something that is unique and doesn't sound like the rest of the resumes that are out there. Then, you can put together a resume that is fit for a specific job. This is one of the best ways to ensure that you get the job that you applied for and get it quickly.

The Slippery Slope of Personal Information Online and Sites That Profit From It - CareerEnlightenment.com
In October of 2013, Google announced an algorithm change that downgraded the many different mug shot websites that structure themselves for the practice described above. Google is allowed to alter their results and change their algorithm at will, but some question if targeting specific sites that are not doing anything that is technically illegal is the ârightâ thing to do.Granted, these sites are not spreading positivity and what they do is bordering on crossing the line of privacy, as well as extortion. So it is not like anyone (other than the site owners) wants them around making money off of peopleâs misfortune. Mastercard has also frowned upon this activity and has stopped allowing them to accept Mastercard as a form of online payment. However, the question still remains, should Google be dictating what we can and cannot see in search results? If they curb these types of websites, then whoâs next?Manage Your Own Online ReputationAt the very least, Googleâs ranking smack down of mug shot websites means that it will be easier for you to control your online information and build the reputation that you want to be known for in your professional career. Here are some tips for taking control of your own search results and having an excellent showing the next time a potential employer âGooglesâ you.Fill Out Social Media Profiles: Even though most of your social media channels are private and only your âfriendsâ can see what you post, the profile section is still public. Fill in all the fields and use a professional looking photo. Your profile photo is public and can be seen by anyone.Get Your Free Personal Websites: There are several different websites like About.Me and ItsMyURLs that are free. Set yourself up with each of them and fill in all of the fields they ask for. Add in as much personal and professional details that you want everyone to see. Remember these are public web pages, not private social profiles.Update Your Google Profile: Your Google profile is now attached to Google Plus and that should be filled out completely with as much information as you can think of, make yourself look professional. You never know which connection might help you get a job.Take Full Advantage of LinkedIn: LinkedIn is the professional social network. Your other social channels can keep up appearances for you, but LinkedIn is where you can network, post your resume, and many people find jobs there. If youd like to attract top employers to your LinkedIn profile, check out Joshuas LinkedIn Writing Service.

Career Aids We All Forget About!
Career Aids We All Forget About! If youâre stuck in your career at the minute, and you feel like there is no one or nothing out there that can help you, then we really do feel your pain. But let us tell you this, career aids are all around us, you might just not know about them. But thatâs why so many of us feel as though weâre trapped in our career with no one to help, because we know the last thing that a lot of your employers do is actually help you. So many of them just throw you in at the deep end, expect you to know what to do, and hope that you become their number one employee. What happens when you donât pick things up within the first five minutes, youâre judged, moaned at, and your career life could be made a living hell. So, if youâre stuck in a company at the minute who just isnât cutting the mustard for you, weâre here to solve a few things for you. Here are just a few of the career aids we think are out there, and how you can use them to your advantage. The Wonderful Web The wonderful web is definitely the place to be if you want to ensure youâre getting allll of the career aids, because there is just so many. First of all, youâve got career advice in the masses on the internet, which we think is really helpful. Take a problem at work for example, perhaps youâre being bullied. This problem at work can spill over into your personal life, and make you feel depressed and victimised to say the least. All you have to do is a quick Google search, and you can find all of the information you need to form a case against those who might be bullying you. Now, that is a bit of an extreme, but that doesnât mean that the web isnât full of so many different bits of information to fill your brain with. You could learn how to be more motivated, what new careers there are that might catch your eye, and what you should be earning from the career youâre doing at the minute. If you donât do your research, youâre never going to find out anything, and what you do find out could lead you to make an informed decision about switching careers! Always use the web to your advantage, no matter what weâre talking about in life. Outside Training Outside training is something we definitely think that you should consider, but we know you probably wonât have up until now. Outside training is really important for growing your skills base, and your knowledge around a subject. But because your company that youâre working for might not offer any outside training courses, youâve probably never considered one. But whatâs stopping you from going to companies such as Training connection, and finding a course thatâs going to help you in your career? Yes, you might have to pay, but knowledge definitely is power. The more you know, the more you have the potential of being able to make. There are so many courses out there that will relate to your career, so do a bit of research and find out whether you could do one! Career Events Something you might not have thought of, and might not have ever been to unless it was at school. But what is stopping you from going to something like this? Itâs a great way of being able to get all the knowledge you need about different career paths, and using them to your advantage. You could spend the day listening to talks, talking to people, and gathering information on a range of different careers. All it takes is just one of those careers to catch your eye, and you could send yourself down a new path that you never thought you would be on. You usually donât have to pay to go to these either which is always a bonus! The People Around You Finally, you should really rely on the people around you at your career. Life is too short to be suffering in silence on your own at your job, so if you ever find yourself struggling, talk to your colleagues. No doubt you probably already hear them moaning about the same things as well, so rally together and try and do something about it. The more people you have around you to rely on, the happier youâre going to be in your role!

Review Getting from College to Career by Lindsey Pollak Career Advice that Transcends Generations! -
Review Getting from College to Career by Lindsey Pollak Career Advice that Transcends Generations! - To top off my getting organized for your job hunt blogs, I thought this would be a perfect time to review and recommend Lindsey Pollaks book, Getting from College to Career. Lindsey is an author, speaker and consultant specializing in career development for college students and young professionals. In Getting from College to Career, she warmly and generously shares personal experiences and stories from all types of professionals covering topics such as: figuring out what you want to do, how to market yourself, where to look for opportunities (including entrepreneurship) and how to prepare for interviews. While the book targets college students and recent grads, the advice transcends generations! Lindsey acknowledges her obsession with taking action, trying new things, meeting new people and having a wide variety of experiences to enhance a job hunt. She notes (and I agree) that you cant plan your career by sitting around and thinking really hard. Her first tip Start Wherever You Are is a perfect opening for the job seeker who thinks he or she needs more more information, more advice, more research, before REALLY starting a successful search. My first boss on Wall Street always said, The perfect is the enemy of the good. In other words, if you wait for all of the stars to align before starting something, youll never get off the ground. If you want to drive your own career bus, you first need to put the key in the ignition and turn it no matter where you are parked! Lindsey reminds her readers that Action always yields rewards and emphasizes the importance of taking action on behalf of your career every day. Make a call, write a note, send a follow-up email, attend a networking eventYou cant underestimate the value of every action you take to move your search forward. How does Lindsey suggest you get organized for a job search? Buy a notebook (with a cool cover) to record ideas and information. Develop a filing system to keep all of the key paperwork that will pass through your hands. Keep a calendar with ALL of your appointments to avoid double-booking. Start a log or spreadsheet for all of your interactions with employers and networking contacts. Create a database system to track everyone you meet along the way! One of my favorite tips? #27 Relax. A Job Is Not a Soul Mate. The fact is, with workers expected to have 9 careers in a lifetime and an average of 3 jobs in each one (with 50% of those careers not even discovered yet), dont think of a job as a marriage. If you make a mistake, you can take your transferable skills and move to another opportunity. Getting from College to Career is a terrific resource, full of tips to guide job seekers along a successful path. I highly recommend it to anyone getting ready for a job hunt! Ready to take the plunge and look for a job? Still need a great resume? Some help to write the perfect cover letter? Im here to help!
